FAQ - SNFs

What is Physiatry?

Physiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on the functional aspect of medicine to give patients a better quality of life. We can work with patients in many inpatient and outpatient settings. We are not therapists (PT, OT, SLP) but rather work alongside them to optimize patient outcomes.

What does Physiatry do?

Physiatry works alongside the primary medicine physician, therapists, nursing, case management, and administration to provide the best patient care and outcomes.

In the post-acute setting, we help to overcome barriers to rehab whether that be discomfort due to pain, agitation, or other issues. Please see the attached list of many problems we can help with. We work with the patients, their families, and staff to figure out the best solutions.

We can help with medication management, non-pharmacologic approaches, and bedside interventions. We also provide appropriate documentation that can help to improve patient care and outcomes.

What does this service mean for our patients?

Physiatry helps overcome barriers to rehab, enhance function, and improve quality of life. Your patients will have a rehabilitation specialist rounding on them usually twice a week. Both the patients and their families will have a resource to provide answers about their current and future rehab status.

What does this mean for our current staff?

Simply put, LRC will be an added resource to your staff. We will independently round on active rehab patients, usually twice a week. Each time we come into your facility, we will communicate with therapy and nursing to identify any barriers to rehab so that we can make plans to overcome them. Communication with the primary physician or APP will remain vital throughout our collaboration.

Our role is to focus on the patient's rehab. We do not take over management of the patient's chronic medical issues such as diabetes or hypertension. We do not take the place of the primary physicians but rather work along side them.

What does this mean for our facility?

The goal of our partnership is to provide the best patient care.

You will be able to market Physiatry rounding regularly in your facility to prospective patients.

We will work together to prevent falls and wounds, decrease transfers back to the acute setting, provide education, and increase discharges to home.

We can also see any long term care residents that you would like us to see.

Will you provide your own equipment?

We will bring our ultrasound or myoguide for any planned injections.
